Matsue South – Japanese Restaurants

AKISHIMA

English menu available.

A  friendly Japanese restaurant in central Matsue serving fresh local  seafood and a large selection of shochu and local sake.

Akishima is conveniently located near the station and main hotels. They serve sashimi, sushi, clam soup, squid and meat dishes, salads etc.

Opening Times: Lunch: 11:30am – 1:30pm and Dinner: 5:30pm – 11:00pm (It is not open for lunch on Saturdays, Sundays or national holidays)

Closed on Mondays

Getting There: Take the north exit out of Matsue Station and turn left onto the main road ahead of you. Take the first right (there’s a bank on the corner). Take the first left, and it’s the last shop down in a row of three on your left, next to the car park.

KANEYASU (Seafood)

English menu available.

Kaneyasu is a small friendly restaurant not far from Matsue Station. They serve fresh seafood from the surrounding area including Lake Shinji, and seasonal vegetables. They have an interesting dish consisting of Shimane beef, squid, shrimp and vegetables, called ‘Hearn Yaki’, which is named after Lafcadio Hearn, the writer who used to live in the city. The restaurant has counter seats where you can enjoy getting to know the locals!

Opening Times: Lunch: 11:30am – 2:00pm / Dinner: 5:00pm – 9:00pm. (Only open for dinner on Saturdays, closed on Sundays and national holidays, (but times change in the long holiday periods.)

Getting There: Take the North Exit out of Matsue Station and use the underground walkway to cross the main road opposite. Head north up the road (towards the river away from the station) and take the first left. You will come to a small building on your right just after a new-ish restaurant that has a big crab stuck to it.

NEKKO

English menu available.

Nekko is located very near to the South Exit of Matsue Station. It serves local seafood such as shijimi clams from Lake Shinji and raw Shimane beef. The restaurant is part of the Nekko Group which has two other restaurants in Matsue (see ‘Matsue North – Japanese Restaurants’ and below for details of the others.

Opening Times: Lunch: 11:00am – 2:00pm / Dinner: 5:00pm – 10:30pm (Last orders at 10:00pm. Open daily).

Getting There: Take the South Exit of Matsue Station, cross the taxi rank and car park opposite and it is on the corner opposite Nova.

NEKKO-YA

English menu available.

Nekko-ya is located on the edge of the entertainment district Isemiya, opposite the Ohashigawa River. It mainly serves local seasonal seafood, and also raw Shimane beef and lamb imported from Australia.  The restaurant is part of the Nekko Group which has two other restaurants in Matsue (see ‘Matsue North – Japanese Restaurants’ and above for details of the others.

Opening Times: Lunch: 11:30am – 2:00pm. Dinner: Sunday to Thursday: 5:00pm – 10:30pm (Last orders at 10:00pm) and Friday/Saturday: 5:00pm – 11:00pm (Last orders at 10:30pm). (Closed on the first Monday of every month.)

Getting There: Take the North Exit out of Matsue Station and use the underground walkway to cross the main road opposite. Head north up the road (towards the river away from the station) and turn left at the river. Head up that road (river on your right) and it is located on a corner just before a big ryokan (Japanese inn) on your left.

RISE IN (Raijin)

English menu available

Rise In is a modern style  izakaya and bar with a wide selection of Japanese, Asian and Western dishes and drinks. It is very popular, even on weekdays, and is one of the few places in Matsue that stays open late.

Opening Times: 5:00pm – 3:00am. Open all year round.

Getting There: Take the North Exit of Matsue Station and get onto the main road opposite and turn left. Walk past the banks/hotels etc to the next crossing. You should see a music shop on the corner opposite you. On the opposite corner is a modern looking building of shops/apartments etc. Rise In is on the ground floor.

TOKYU INN

English menu available and English spoken.

The Tokyu Inn is a major hotel just in front of Matsue Station (North side). They serve Japanese courses containing grilled, boiled, fried and vinegared dishes, and also Western style dishes including steak and curry and a course containing seafood and meat dishes, bread and dessert. They also have Japanese and Western breakfast and lunch buffets.

And…every Sunday they have an all-you-can-eat cake buffet from 2:30 – 4:30! (1,200 per person with a free drink.)

Opening Times: Breakfast: 7:00 – 10:00am / Lunch buffet: 11:30am – 2:00pm / Dinner: 5:00pm – 10:00pm (Last orders at 9:30pm, open daily.)

Getting There: Take the North Exit out of Matsue Station and use the underground walkway to cross the main road opposite. Cross the lights heading east and it is just on your left. (You sould be able to see it from the station.)
